Quality And Fairness

Cambridge EFL examinations are respected throughout the world, and enormous effort goes into ensuring that the examinations are valid and reliable tests of English. Before any tasks or questions are included in a real examination, they are trialed on students at a suitable level - a process called 'pre-testing'. This helps to ensure that all examination materials are at the right level of difficulty and are not biased towards people from particular ethnic, linguistic or educational background. Only when all the materials have been checked and UCLES is certain that they meet the correct standard are they used in actual question papers.

UCLES works with thousands of highly trained examiners to write and mark the examination papers, and carry out Speaking tests. The examiners work in teams, led by very experienced examiners who co-ordinate the examining to ensure that standards remain consistent.

Before a school or institution can become an approved Cambridge EFL centre, it has to meet rigorous selection criteria. Centres operate according to clearly defined regulations and UCLES carries out regular centre inspections to ensure that standards are maintained.
